Malia Maxwell is a writer from Seattle, WA. Her poems appear or are forthcoming in The Kenyon Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Poetry Northwest, No Tokens, Frozen Sea, takahē magazine, the Washington State Queer Poetry Anthology, and elsewhere. Her writing has been supported by scholarships and fellowships from Bread Loaf Environmental and the Vermont Studio Center.
She is an MFA candidate in Poetry at the Helen Zell Writers’ Program, where she won the 2025 Michael R. Gutterman Award in Poetry and a 2024 Hopwood Graduate Poetry Award. She holds a BA, Honors in English Literature from Stanford University.
Drawing upon her mixed European and Kanaka Maoli ancestry, much of her work focuses on family and place. In addition to writing, Malia serves as an Editorial Assistant for Poetry Northwest and an Assistant Editor for Michigan Quarterly Review.
